What's Up with Cain?

I mean the son of Adam - the one who killed his brother Abel. Here's what the bible says:

3 And in process of time it came to pass, that Cain brought of the fruit of the ground an offering unto the LORD.
4 And Abel, he also brought of the firstlings of his flock and of the fat thereof. And the LORD had respect unto Abel and to his offering:
5 But unto Cain and to his offering he had not respect. And Cain was very wroth, and his countenance fell.
6 And the LORD said unto Cain, Why art thou wroth? and why is thy countenance fallen?
7 If thou doest well, shalt thou not be accepted? and if thou doest not well, sin lieth at the door. And unto thee shall be his desire, and thou shalt rule over him.
8 And Cain talked with Abel his brother: and it came to pass, when they were in the field, that Cain rose up against Abel his brother, and slew him.
9 And the LORD said unto Cain, Where is Abel thy brother? And he said, I know not: Am I my brother's keeper?
10 And he said, What hast thou done? the voice of thy brother's blood crieth unto me from the ground.
11 And now art thou cursed from the earth, which hath opened her mouth to receive thy brother's blood from thy hand;
12 When thou tillest the ground, it shall not henceforth yield unto thee her strength; a fugitive and a vagabond shalt thou be in the earth.
Genesis 4
So here is what I understand:

Cain offered GOD some kind of edible vegetation (e.g.: apples, bananas, wheat, rice.)
Abel offered GOD parts of an animal (a sheep or something - which he had killed.)
GOD did not like the vegetables but loved the (probably burning) flesh.
GOD went into a detailed explanation of this so there should be no misunderstanding.
Cain killed Abel.
GOD got very upset with Cain and cursed him.

However, I don't REALLY understand:

What exactly was the problem?
If GOD thought that Cain should have known better:

"And the LORD God said: 'Behold, the man is become as one of us, to know good and evil; and now, lest he put forth his hand, and take also of the tree of life, and eat, and live for ever. - Genesis 3:22 " meaning that he knew right from wrong, why then did GOD later on feel the need to come forth with the 10 commandments?

Oh, and here's the kicker: one of these commandments states: "Thou shall not kill!" yet neither the Jews, the Moslems or any of the 5000 different sects of Christ followers has ever officially obeyed it. (The very small vegetarian minority stayed out of trouble by never stating that this is the cause of their vegeterianism.)

So, as far as I can tell, GOD may have said "Thou shall not kill!" at some point but didn't really mean it.
Becuse, HE loved Abel's animal offering right? (I think Abel had to kill it - or did I miss something?)

Main conclusion:

Cain was no guiltier for killing Abel, than Abel was for killing a sheep.

More conclusions:

GOD is not a vegetarian.
When some minister or preacher talks about lost sheep that should rejoin the flock, just remember this:
a. GOD loves the smell of burning sheep/flesh - watch your ass.
b. Not too long ago, the CHURCH has indulged that appetite by burning hundreds of thousands of my ancestors at the stake.
